Seoul Line 2 Inner or Outer Circle: Which Train Should You Take?

Quick answer: On Seoul Subway Line 2, Inner Circle (내선순환) runs clockwise and Outer Circle (외선순환) runs counterclockwise around the main loop. To choose a platform, match the next station on your route with the platform sign, then check the arriving train’s destination. The green line colour alone is not enough.

Standing between two green Line 2 signs and wondering which train to take? Start with your next stop, rather than trying to picture the whole circle. This guide answers one question: which direction should I board on Line 2? For tickets, fares and transfers, use our complete Seoul subway guide.

Inner vs outer circle: what the signs mean

English labelKorean labelDirection around the main loop
Inner Circle내선순환Clockwise
Outer Circle외선순환Counterclockwise

The labels describe the two tracks around the circle, not separate inner and outer areas of Seoul. Seoul’s explanation gives City Hall toward Wangsimni as the inner-circle direction, and City Hall toward Sinchon as the outer-circle direction. Read the city’s explanation of the two directions (Korean).

Choose the platform in four checks

  1. Open a route from your current station. Enter the exact destination station or place. Our NAVER Map guide explains how to search and read directions.
  2. Note the first station after yours. Keep that name visible on your phone. A distant landmark is less useful when you are comparing two platform signs.
  3. Match it with the station sign. Check the line number and the next-station arrow. If the app and sign use different English spellings, compare the Korean name too.
  4. Check this train’s destination before boarding. The correct direction does not by itself tell you how far a particular train will run. Read the display and listen for announcements.

Use this check again when you transfer or return later in the day. A platform number remembered from another station is not a reliable direction guide.

Example: Hongik Univ. to Sinchon or Hapjeong

Hongik Univ. is the station for Hongdae, written 홍대입구 in Korean. On Line 2 its adjacent stations are Sinchon (신촌) and Hapjeong (합정), as shown on NAVER’s Hongik Univ. station page.

Starting at Hongik Univ., going to…Next station to matchLoop direction
SinchonSinchon / 신촌Inner Circle
HapjeongHapjeong / 합정Outer Circle

These are neighbouring-station examples, not a claim that one direction is best for every trip starting in Hongdae. For a longer journey, compare the full route for your destination. A route with a transfer may suit you better than staying on Line 2.

Seongsu and Sindorim: check the branch, too

Line 2 includes two branches as well as the main circle. The Seongsu branch connects Seongsu and Sinseol-dong; the Sinjeong branch connects Sindorim and Kkachisan. These are separate route choices, even though they belong to the same line. Seoul describes both in its Line 2 branch overview (Korean).

At Seongsu or Sindorim, follow the signs for the part of Line 2 your route actually uses. If your destination is on the main circle, do not choose a branch platform simply because its sign is green. If you are travelling to a branch station, follow the branch connection shown in your route instead of treating inner versus outer circle as the whole journey.

What if you board in the wrong direction?

If the next-station display does not match your route, get off at the next safe stop and recheck your journey. Follow the station’s signs for the other direction. Do not assume you can cross straight over: access between platforms depends on the station layout. Ask staff before passing through an exit gate if you are unsure how to change sides.

Do not stay aboard just because the route is a circle. Going the long way can add a substantial detour, and the train’s destination may require you to change trains. If you need to meet someone, message them after you have checked the revised route.

FAQ

Is inner circle clockwise on Seoul Line 2?

Yes. Inner Circle, 내선순환, is clockwise around the main loop. Outer Circle, 외선순환, is counterclockwise. Match the next station before boarding rather than relying only on the English label.

Why does my destination appear in both directions?

The main route is a circle, so the same station can lie ahead in either direction around the loop. Compare the journey, then check the particular train you are boarding. A loop map is not a promise that every train completes a full circuit.

Should I pick the side with fewer stops?

It is a useful first comparison when both options stay on the main loop, but check a current route for transfers, waiting and service changes. If you are travelling late, check the last usable connection for your destination rather than assuming the line has one universal closing time.

Do I need a different ticket for inner and outer circle?

They are directions on Line 2, not different ticket products. For buying and using a transport card, see our T-money guide. If you need help after trains stop, our Kakao T and k.ride guide covers taxi-app setup.

Before you board

Line 2 → correct next station → correct train destination. Keep those three checks together. You do not need to memorize the whole loop to choose the right platform.
